2019 Africa Cup of Nations

Egypt will host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, the Confederation of African Football (Caf) has announced.

Egypt beat South Africa, the only other nation to bid, by 16 votes to one with one abstention at a Caf executive committee vote in Senegal.

Original host nation Cameroon was stripped of staging duties in November because of slow preparations.

Egypt has just six months to prepare for the expanded 24-team finals, which kick off in June.

It will be the fifth time Egypt, which won the tournament when it last hosted in 2006, has staged the tournament.

“I want to thank the (Caf) Executive Committee for the trust, and I thank the government for this support,” said Egypt FA (EFA) president Hany Abu Rida.

“We organised the tournament on 2006 and that make us against a challenge to make better and better, we are ready for this honour.”

“The guarantee from government helped us to win against South Africa and that will help us to make a good tournament,” added Ahmed Shobair, vice-president of Egypt’s FA.

“The fans will be back again in the stadiums, which will be full in the tournament I promise.”

Egypt will use eight stadiums during the tournament, hosting in five different cities: Alexandria, Ismailia, Port Said, Suez and the capital Cairo.

Caf had originally planned to name the new hosts on Wednesday 9 January.

Since stripping Cameroon of this year’s event, Caf has offered the country the chance to stage the finals in two years’ time, which has meant that the original hosts for both the 2021 and 2023 finals have been asked to delay their tournaments.

Ivory Coast, which was set to host the 2021 games, has protested against the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Guinea’s football federation announced on Monday that it has agreed to move its staging of the Nations Cup from 2023 to 2025.

Tuesday’s announcement took place in the Senegalese capital Dakar, which will host Caf’s annual awards ceremony later in the day.

Egypt’s Mohamed Salah is looking to retain his title as he takes on Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Senegal’s Sadio Mane for the African Player of the Year award.

Former Zimbabwe cricketer and ICC umpire Sarah Dambanevana dies aged 36

The ICC and Zimbabwe Cricket have paid tribute to Sarah Dambanevana, a former Zimbabwe fast bowler who became a pioneering international umpire.

Former Zimbabwe women’s cricketer and international umpire Sarah Dambanevana has died at the age of 36, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Tuesday.

In a media release dated 13 October, the ICC said she had passed away following a brief illness. Cricinfo, citing a Zimbabwe Cricket release, reported that she died in Harare on Monday and had been receiving hospital care since undergoing a medical procedure in March.

Dambanevana represented Zimbabwe as a fast bowler before moving into officiating. According to the ICC, she became the first female umpire from Zimbabwe to join the ICC Development Umpires Panel, in 2022, and received her first ICC appointment at the Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in January 2023.

Both the ICC and Cricinfo record that her senior international umpiring career began on 2 September 2023, and that she went on to officiate at the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. The ICC said her last match was a T20 international between Ireland and Thailand on 1 February 2026, during the Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier in Nepal. She stood in dozens of senior internationals across men’s and women’s cricket; the two organisations give different match totals, so no figure is quoted here.

ICC chairman Jay Shah said her journey from representing Zimbabwe on the field to making history as an international umpire had been an inspiration, and that her achievements helped pave the way for more women to pursue careers in cricket officiating. Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani, quoted by Cricinfo, said she showed young Zimbabwean women that they belong at the highest levels of the game, and that her passing leaves a painful void in the country’s cricket family.

The ICC extended its condolences to her family, friends and colleagues, and to Zimbabwe Cricket. Funeral arrangements had not been published in the sources reviewed by AllInZimbabwe at the time of writing.

CAF allows 10,000 fans back at National Sports Stadium for two matches

Zimbabwe’s football association says CAF has granted strictly conditional permission for up to 10,000 spectators at two fixtures, after a fan died following the Warriors’ defeat to DR Congo.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has partly lifted the closed-doors order at Harare’s National Sports Stadium, allowing up to 10,000 spectators at two upcoming matches, according to the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA).

In a statement reported by NewZimbabwe.com, ZimLive and Soccer24, ZIFA said CAF had given “exceptional, strictly conditional authorisation” for a maximum of 10,000 fans per match. The two fixtures are the Mighty Warriors’ Women’s Olympic qualifier against Malawi on 13 October and Scottland FC’s CAF Champions League tie against Atlético Petróleos de Luanda, provisionally set for 17 October.

The restrictions were imposed after a supporter died and fans invaded the pitch following the Warriors’ 2-1 home loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo last month. Zimbabwe was ordered to play its next home internationals behind closed doors while safety arrangements were reviewed.

ZIFA says gates will open five hours before kick-off for security screening, orderly entry and seating, and that spectators will be confined to designated areas. Ticketing, entry and parking details are to be announced separately. ZIFA said it has a zero-tolerance approach to hooliganism, violence, intimidation, vandalism and forced entry, and that offenders may be refused entry, removed from the ground or banned from future matches.

ZimLive and Soccer24 report that CAF will monitor compliance with its conditions, and that failure to meet them could bring further restrictions. ZIFA has said CAF’s assessment of these two matches will inform future decisions on how many fans are admitted.

ZIFA also extended its condolences to the family of the supporter who died. The Champions League date for Scottland FC remains provisional, and the 10,000 limit has so far been confirmed only for these two fixtures.

CAF orders closed-door matches in Zimbabwe after fan dies at National Sports Stadium

Football’s African governing body has suspended spectator access to matches in Zimbabwe while it reviews safety arrangements, after a supporter died in a stampede at the Warriors’ AFCON qualifier against DR Congo in Harare.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has ordered matches in Zimbabwe to be played without spectators after a supporter died during the Warriors’ Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Democratic Republic of Congo at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.

Information minister Zhemu Soda told reporters after Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting that CAF had “temporarily suspended” spectator access to matches hosted in Zimbabwe. According to ZimLive’s account of the briefing, CAF described the step as a precautionary administrative measure pending a review and verification of safety and security protocols, and said all CAF matches in the country would be held behind closed doors until further notice. CAF also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and to the nation.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed that one person died during a stampede at gate number two at the start of the match. In a statement quoted by South Africa’s Soccer Laduma, police described a “fatal incident involving a police public order vehicle and a pedestrian” and said investigations were under way. The police have not, in the statements reported, named the victim.

Reports differ on how far the sanction goes. ZimLive, citing the Cabinet briefing, reports that the closed-door order covers all CAF matches in Zimbabwe for the duration of the suspension. Soccer Laduma, relying on a Soccer24 report, says CAF has also ordered a heavy fine and that the Warriors’ next home qualifier, likely against Equatorial Guinea, will be played without fans. Earlier reports before the announcement, including one from AfricaSoccer, had suggested Zimbabwe might lose the right to host home matches altogether. The Cabinet account does not mention that outcome, and the length of the suspension has not been stated.

The incident is a blow for Zimbabwean football. The National Sports Stadium only recently returned to hosting international fixtures after years in which the national team was forced to stage its home games in neighbouring countries. CAF granted the venue Category 3 approval in August.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) is expected to face scrutiny over crowd management and stadium security. It is not yet clear when CAF will complete its review or what conditions it will set before fans can return.
